I've got a problem; some of them big European hornets (yellow, black and brown, 1.25-1.5" long) are living underneath the cedar siding on my Grandmother's house, and directly below them about four feet away there are zillions of little yellow jackets buzzing in and out of a small hole in the block foundation. I bought a can of hornet spray and sprayed the entrance to both nests from 10 feet away but only inflicted a few deaths and I can't get closer 'cause the hornets and yellow jackets gang up on me and run me off. They actually seem to have formed some sort of alliance and attack in unison. Beats all I've ever seen. Grandma's scared of them and I can't get rid of them. Any ideas?
P.S.- Oh yeah, I also tried throwing gasoline on them but I can't get much in their holes and they repel all my attacks. The hornets even attack me at night. Them things HURT! :crying:

Time to call pest control.

I agree with Brett. But here's a link to an article that tells about them and what you might try to do if you can't get a professional.

Those things scare me anyway. I don't like stinging, flying things..lol

They tend to attack anything "other". They also release a chemical signature when killed that draws more to the spot ( angry ). You might consider setting up one of these very close by:

But I to would suggest bringing in pest control.

Try spraying them at night, and the Yellow Jackets in the ground pour some Feul Oil in the hole and light it, don't use gasoline though. They go dormant at night if the temperature goes down. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_2_208.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm824MNUS)

Fuel oil? You mean the stuff you put in oil lanterns?

Its pretty much the same thing as diesel or kerosene. It's heating fuel.

Diesel would do the trick. Pour it down the hole and light it. If you use gasoline it explodes. If you use diesel it will burn for a while and light them up. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_7_200.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm824MNUS)

We had problems with bees down at our cabin in Luna County and went to the Dept. of Agriculture about it, fearing that they were killer bees. They came with a sprayer of hot water and soap, and sprayed the bees. The soap suds worked and took out the colony they were forming. Maybe you could use one of those large metal sprayers that is used for weed poison, etc.

I'd mix diesel and styrofoam for the yellow jackets....it makes napalm, and will stick to the nest rather than creating a vortex when burning that they can fly up through.

The problem is that they are horizontal in the wall. The hornets are entering under the siding vertically from underneath, and the yellow jackets are going in a tiny hole in the foundation wall about four feet away from the hornets.
My efforts have the yellow jackets on hightened alert. They boil out of the hole if I get within ten feet now. And after dark- the hornets still come out, they ain't scared of the dark like the yellow jackets. They prevent me from getting close to the yellow jacket hole.
People around here call the hornets "Japenese Hornets" but I looked them up and we had it wrong. Here's the wikipedia article on them: European Hornet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespa_crabro)

I think you're going to have to call an exterminator, and he will probably remove some of that siding. Some things take a professional.

But, if you put a match to kerosene of fuel, won't it burn down the house?

What do they feed on, Joe? I was wondering about some kind of treated something like you use with fire ants or red ants (Amdro). Granted, it would take a day or two, but if there's something they could take back in with them, it would help, I'd think.
Oh, and I also saw a thing on TV about using a fire extinguisher to knock them down as they come out of the hole so that you can get close. Don't know how feasible that is in your situation, though.
