I have a variety of Chess experiences. In my travels, I have beaten an International Master and Drawn One. I have beaten numerous Masters and experts. All of these are in various time controls. In the Amateur section one year, I was in the championship game for the State Speed Chess Championships.
Age and physical limitations caused me to stop competing. I was probably at best an "A" strength player on a good day. That is just below expert.
Having been so active, fifteen months ago, I stopped everything but coaching. And even in coaching, I scaled back. I wanted to study God's word and sharpen my apologetics skills.
This season was an unexpected blessing. My 2nd/3rd grade team took 3rd at State. I had one team take 4th at State some years back. That team also took 2nd in the Nation at the National Youth Action Championships. That team had three kids finish top 6 in the state for their grade.
I also have a National High School Champion whom I trained during his Middle School and early High School years. Another young man with whom I coached won the Freshman, Sophmore, and Junior Championships at State.
My Technique is to learn/study tactics. That is the power in Amateur chess. And sometimes, you can prevail over upper level players. I play the Sicillian Dragon Defense. I played the French Defense for years. But, it was too passive. Ironically, I got most of major victories with the French Defense.:bigthink:
My theory with youth is to teach them traps and quick winning plans. This boosts their confidence and score points.
