I am not surprised by these types of things, in fact I think I am expecting these things to be seen more and more in our society. They are wake up calls to abandon sin and return to God. We bring these things on ourselves as we allow sin to be a standard among our leaders and those that teach our children. I kind of see history in light of the following crude chart.
Explanation:
Evil when it is most abundant is less intense to those that experience it, and good is more intense and at a greater depth. Because of their conditioning to evil, evil is perceived differently than when good is most prevalent. When good is most prevalent then evil becomes more intense and darker in nature, but good is seen less intense. Those that do evil when good is abundantly perceived do evil at a deeper and more intense nature.
