Are there standard permissions that go along with an open letter? Are open letters free to distribute and reproduce, or are they copyright protected?

Does this help?

Does the creative commons apply to all internet media? I was hoping that open letters would fall under general public license, but I can't find anything telling me what applies where, and maybe calling something an "open letter" has no bearing on permissions. I'm almost completely ignorant here.

Can you find anything HERE (http://www.copyright.gov/title17/). I am very ignorant in this area and have been wondering about this myself. I want to use some materials on LAD, but am not sure how all of this works. Especially as it is applied to books, pamphlets and letters.

I have seen the creative commons symbol on many blogs. Would a blog post be considered an Open Letter?

I don't know. Wish there was an attorney in the family, so I could find out for Joe. Call the local Bar Association. Ask your one pro bono question.

Some forums, one we know quite well, states that when you register, whatever you write on that forum belongs to them.

I would think that an Open Letter is copyrighted as intellectual property. But I am no attorney.

Joe, where do you plan on using this Open Letter? The information you're looking for might be available where you plan to send the Open Letter.
